They were welded in years ago, but I never got enough ambition to finish it. ![]() No, the aprons were fine, just the heater channels were rusted. Hahah bummer! after all that work to weld the rear apron on and everything! what did you do with the roll cage when you where tearing it all apart? I've never seen a cell half inside and half outside the car like that The gas tank went through it in the other pictures. In the end, it was just meant to be a baja. I tacked the bottom half of a '68 rollover victim to it to try to save it-(look at the bright green parts). The wiring looks a little shabby, so I guess it rises to the top of the list: The car came with an 1835 that's supposed to run, so I'll probably put it in. I'll save the new beam for that project, and in the meantime will be on the lookout for bargains. Eventually I'd like tie the beam to the cage, put on some longer front arms, get rid of the torsion springs, put on a one piece front end, etc. I think I am going to just leave the front end alone for now. Thanks, everyone, for helping give some direction to this project. Or buy a spring set made for a 6" over beam. Usually you will need 2 sets of spring and cut to match the distance from grub to trailing arm grub. The replacement beam has 4 sets of grubs-will the stock leaves work? You will also want beam supports to support further out the beam. Yes, make sure they are for a link pin beam spacing. I think I could just swap the beams, using everything else on the car except the tie rods-but the new beam doesn't have the brackets that attach it to the frame head: Posted: Tue 10:24 am Post subject: Re: Bugzilla's build I would also leave the front beam alone, your bug's stance is pretty much perfect. Being the nice guy that I am, ship them to me and I will get rid of them for you! The first thing you gotta do is get rid of those ugly rear wheels! Nobody runs jackman's anymore, aluminum is the way to go. save for the scrubbing they took when the wheel bearings went out! BTW, they're LT215-75R/15's on the front. They're a little weather checked, but still have lots of life left in them. ![]() I'd probably keep the current tires for now, for the same reason. It's not a very telling pic, but 1.5" would bring those front tires closer to the rear stance:īeing on a budget, I'd be in the market for matching white spokes. Good point, Lotrat-wheels are on the wish list. ![]() Check your center line on front and rear tires, you want them about equal. That swap will push your wheels out 1-1/2" on both sides which is half of what you'll get with the beam swap. Not sure what your plans are for the wheels, but matching front steel wheels in the 5" flavor will have 3" BS. ![]() The stock front wheels you have now have alot of backspace. Get some 7.00x15's up front and you may not want to swap the beam. Wider is better (remember the pontiac comercials ) but will I be happy with the stock front trailing arms (travel) when paired with the 3x3 in the rear?īaja's need big tires, it's the law. To me it looks "unbalanced", maybe a little anorexic in the front. I'll leave the rear end alone-I'm focusing on the front right now. thanks for clearing that up-I'll fix the post. I'd leave the rear as is for now, your suspension set-up looks pretty decent and you probably have alot of time & money you can spend on other things (engine for example). It should all bolt straight onto the 6" beam. Your front is a link pin, not ball joint. Last edited by Bugzilla on Mon 10:22 pm edited 1 time in total
